Atomium (official) · Atomium, Heysel

The Atomium, with the Design Museum

Entry to the 102-metre steel atom built for the 1958 World's Fair, up to the panorama sphere, plus the Design Museum Brussels a short walk away. It is the obvious second half of a Mini-Europe day, and the official ticket costs about the same here as at the door.

Atomium Ticket with Design Museum

About this experience

The Atomium is an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, nine spheres joined by tubes, and it stands right beside Mini-Europe. The ticket covers the permanent exhibition on Expo 58 and the building's history, the temporary shows inside the upper spheres (light and sound installations, guests report several of them) and the lift to the top sphere for the 360-degree view over Brussels. It also includes the Design Museum Brussels, an 8-minute walk away, with its plastics collection of about 2,000 objects.

This is the Atomium's own ticket on GetYourGuide. At atomium.be an adult pays EUR 17, seniors EUR 15 and children over 115 cm up to 17 EUR 9, and the Design Museum is included there too. The listing here is about $19 with free cancellation. If you are doing Mini-Europe on the same day, read the maths first: the official Atomium and Mini-Europe combo is EUR 35 for an adult, against EUR 42 for two gate tickets.

The honest part. Guests report queues for the lift, and some find the inside thin: two spheres of history, the rest light shows. The Design Museum splits opinion too, from "underwhelming" to "a revelation". Access is hard: only the top sphere is reached by lift, the rest means 80 steps up and 167 down, and the listing rules out wheelchairs. Go at opening or after 15:30; the busiest window is 10:00 to 15:00.

  • The lift to the top sphere and a 360-degree view of Brussels
  • The Expo 58 story told inside the building that came out of it
  • Light and sound installations in the upper spheres
  • Design Museum Brussels included, 8 minutes' walk away
  • A smartphone game to play during the visit

On top of the great views you get from the first sphere and the restaurant, the other sphere’s are an amazing museum for dancing lights and music, it feels like you are in a futuristic spaceship. Escalators experience is also amazing

Very educational and quite impressive. Worth the money plus access to the Design museum just a few minutes out of the way.

A very unique tourist spot in Belgium, although not much to see inside but very memorable for kids and family , and understanding about Belgium history
